Apple Graphing with First Grade

So this week I am working on graphing!  You can do so much with graphing!  My first thought was a tasting party!  You can make this a quick unit or even use all week!  I had to include a cute writing activity to hang on a bulletin board or impress your colleagues and put these little cuties in the hallways!

I will use these cuties at the end of our unit.  There are four friends to choose from.  The students will complete the graphing booklet, which will tell them which "writing buddy" they will hang in the hall.  I'll explain more below.

So the apple graphing booklet will take some prep work on your end ( or some helpful parents ).  I have included a letter to send home for parent involvement and apple donations:)  Day 1 we will talk about graphing and complete the first worksheet.

You will have students taste apple slices.  They will then complete the "My Vote" section on the worksheet.  Students will give the apple slices a star 1 = ok and 4 = loved it.  They will then pass or walk their paper around and have their classmates color in the graph.  If they gave the apple 1 star they will color in the 1 star square.  I tell my students the colors we will be using, for example, "if you chose 1 star I want you to take your green crayon"  they will only color in the 1 star square.  Once all kiddos have colored in worksheets we will then go over class vote section where they will answer how many each "star" received.

There are four pages for our taste testing.  Apple Slices, Apple Juice, Caramel Apple, and Apple Cereal.  You can do a page a day and the Friday start the Whole class graphing.

Day 5 or Friday

The first thing we do is go back through our booklets and use our data to determine what our favorite apple choice was.  Now that each student has completed this page and knows what their favorite choice was we can then start the whole group graph.

Now I once again instruct students what colors we will be using so it all makes sense.  So I chose apple slices on my favorite apple choice.  Now I will take my red crayon around the class and fill in a square above apple slices.  Each student will color a square on graph.  (you could do as a walk around or if that is chaos you can simply pass to your neighbor - if your seating would allow )  Once we have completed the bar graph we then work on the next and last part of the graphing.

The Results - We now talk about the data in our graph.  First we look at our graph and fill in the blanks under the pictures writing how many each choice got.  We then fill in the blanks and complete the worksheet by figuring out which apple choice had the most votes.

Now the trick is to get these littles not to put the same answer on every apple choice!  Spend some time explaining that we want to have different answers and we don't want each apple choice to have 4 stars.  Now that we have completed the booklet we can move on to the cute writing craft.  Students will write which apple choice they chose and why they liked it the best. '

I thought it would be helpful to have a parent letter to send home for apple donations.  It is included in the packet ;)

Have fun with it and they will too!  Students love doing something new and getting to eat yummy  treats!  I am currently working on more graphing resources, but was pretty excited about getting this in my store, so I am going to go ahead and post this as a single purchase; however I will include it in my Chapter 10 Go Math Bundle.  I will add link here once I have completed:)

Kindergarten Halloween Centers

I am so excited to start this new blog!  I have put some serious hours in!  Last year I drew some really cute halloween cuties but with 4 kids under 8 I never got around to posting them.  So I thought I would start this new blog with some Halloween fun!                                                           Click here to buy at my tpt store I was so excited about these cuties I decided to make a few things with them.  I wanted to make these centers 5x7 cards so I could buy one of those super cute photo boxes that everybody is using, but I can't justify the price tag! So for now I think some cute titled envelopes will do. My soon to be 5 year old and I have been getting ready for next year and kindergarten!  So these were made for her, so preschool/kindergarten.  First we started with these cute play-doh mats. I was over the moon with my witch fingers I found at Target.  I was immediately 8 years old and pretending I was the witch in wizard of oz.  I love

Love is in the Air! Valentine's Day Bulletin Board Ideas

I am so excited to share this with you all.  I have fallen in love with creating bulletin boards.  The thing is all that super cute clipart out there that would make things so much easier for me, well it doesn't allow you to create bulletin boards due to copyright because you are not changing the image in any way. So don't do it!  In comes my small artistic ability and an apple pen!  I created three different Valentine's Day displays!  And the best thing is they are all interactive!  Yay!  So, the first one is my "Muffin" board.  This one is for a smaller board about half the size of the great big hallway boards.  It turned out super sweet and fun!  So how does this work interactively? Students will scan thee QR page. The QR code will take students to my first directed drawing with Shelia and Joe!  Here they will draw their very own muffin and then color.  Click the picture to see the video!   After they complete the directed drawing all you have to do is lamina
