Telling Time with 1st graders!

So this week I have been working on Go Math's Chapter 9: measurement and telling time.  I have had so much fun with the telling time section.  I can remember learning how to tell time way back when I was in school.  I think it is such a fun skill to teach!  I have made several teaching activities for you to use while teaching time as well as worksheets for practice and other fun stuff.  Up first is my favorite!  My anchor chart.  Who doesn't love a good anchor chart?  But they can be so time consuming, so my favorite new thing is to create it on PowerPoint and send it to our county to be printed on poster size!  So lucky to have this available and I hope you guys do too!



How it works.  So I made the vocabulary cards to match the Go Math Chapter for time.  As we learn these new words we will add them to our anchor chart.  For our very first lesson, I will be teaching the kiddos the order of the numbers on a clock and where they go.  First I have all the numbers on board and ask students if there is anything they notice about the numbers.  (they can be ordered from 1 to 12)  So we first order our numbers then I have students help me stick them to the clock in the correct order.  Once all numbers are on clock we will then talk about how to read the clock.  Example the 1 on the clock means it is 1 O'clock and so forth.  After we work on this we will build our own clocks all by ourselves!  This ensures you find the ones who may not have understood the order of the numbers on the clock and so forth.  Worksheet in packet as well.  (this anchor chart is in a pdf file saved at 24 x 32)




For the next day we review the numbers on the clock and the order they go in and talk again how 1 means 1 O'clock and so on.  I introduce the hour hand on this day.  We talk about how the hour hand tells us what hour it is.  If it points to 1 it means it is 1:00.  For this I created this apple spinner for the teacher to use and these cute expo mats.



Teacher spins the spinner (paperclip works best) the teacher then says the time (12:00) the students then use their laminated expo markers to write the time in the box as well as draw the hour hand to the correct number (still only working on hour hand).  You could also allow students to spin if they are catching on quickly.   You can also put mats in a page protector instead of laminating them. 



I have a color version as well as BW if your saving on ink!   We will work on this as a whole group.  The students will then complete similar worksheet.

The next day we talk about time to the half hour using the hour hand only.  For this I made these:


I wanted this to be big enough for kiddos to see on the anchor chart board, but not a huge anchor chart poster, so once I saved in a PDF I was able to print as poster at 126%.  This means it will print on two pieces of paper, so I simply trimmed and taped together. Then you can laminate it and it works great!



I stick the clock and the clock pieces to the board and have students pick a clock to stick on the main clock piece.  The students then read the clock and write their answer on their (half page) expo mat.


Day Three we work on time to the half hour again, but with both clock hands this time.  I once again printed at 126% to have something big enough the kiddos could see from the rug.  




They use the half page expo mats again to write the time they read.  I have students write their answer and then raise at the same time.  You can keep note of who might be struggling this way.  

On the last day we work together to create "My Day" booklet.  I created cards to use on board with magnets.  Simply laminate and cut out.  I put the clock cards in one section of board and the time cards on another, I then read the first card... "I woke up at six-thirty."  I then call on students to find matching clock and time cards. 


Now you can choose to have students working on booklet at the same time or you could do as a whole group activity and then have students complete booklets independently at their desk.



Students can cut and paste times to booklets or fill in blanks.  Students will also draw hands on clock showing given time.  There are a total of 9 times in this booklet.

Kindergarten Halloween Centers

I am so excited to start this new blog!  I have put some serious hours in!  Last year I drew some really cute halloween cuties but with 4 kids under 8 I never got around to posting them.  So I thought I would start this new blog with some Halloween fun!                                                           Click here to buy at my tpt store I was so excited about these cuties I decided to make a few things with them.  I wanted to make these centers 5x7 cards so I could buy one of those super cute photo boxes that everybody is using, but I can't justify the price tag! So for now I think some cute titled envelopes will do. My soon to be 5 year old and I have been getting ready for next year and kindergarten!  So these were made for her, so preschool/kindergarten.  First we started with these cute play-doh mats. I was over the moon with my witch fingers I found at Target.  I was immediately 8 years old and pretending I was the witch in wizard of oz.  I love

20 Small Group Center Ideas

SMALL GROUP...  My two most hated words my first 3 years of teaching... the sound of these words together made my stomach turn!  Everyone from coworkers to specialists had the ideas, but the countless hours I spent trying to make these "ideas" and this time engaging for the ENTIRE class was disgusting. I gave up many nights and weekends trying to find something that worked and kept the littles attention for longer than 2 minutes! I spent hours laminating and cutting - trying to make hands on activities that not only kept them engaged but was also growing those little brains!  Everything I tried just didn't seem to keep them at their desks working independently , so I could work with the kiddos at my small group table.  I was defeated. I felt like I was failing my students. I knew my low babies needed this time more than any part of the day, but I just couldn't find a way to make it successful. Fast forward out of my self pity to a Christmas craft fair in my hometown.
